Finl is operated by Tsung Jui Hsieh ("we," "us," or "our"), an individual developer based in Taiwan. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect your personal information when you use the Finl mobile application ("App").
By using Finl, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
The data we collect depends on your subscription tier. Free users can use Finl entirely offline without providing any personal information. Pro subscribers who choose to enable cloud sync will provide certain account and financial data.
A. Personal Identifiers
Free Users: We do not collect any personal identifiers.
Pro Users: When you subscribe to Finl Pro and sign in with Apple, we collect:
- Name (optional, provided by Apple Sign In)
- Email address (optional, provided by Apple Sign In - may be an Apple-provided private relay address)
- Unique user identifier (generated by our authentication system to link your data across devices)
How Collected: Directly provided by you when you choose to sign in with your Apple ID.
B. Financial Information
Free Users: All your expense data (amounts, merchants, descriptions, categories, budgets, recurring expenses) is stored exclusively on your device. We never receive, transmit, or access this data.
Pro Users: When you enable cloud sync, we collect and store:
- Expense records (amounts, dates, descriptions, merchants)
- Budget settings and targets
- Expense categories (both default and custom categories)
- Recurring expense definitions (frequency, amounts, descriptions)
- Currency preferences
How Collected: User-entered data through the app, or extracted from receipts and voice commands when you use Pro AI features.
C. User Content
Receipt Images (Pro Feature): When you use the receipt scanner, we temporarily process your receipt photos to extract expense information. The original images are not permanently stored.
Voice Recordings (Pro Feature): When you create expenses using voice input, audio is recorded and converted to text on your device. Only the text transcription is transmitted to our servers for processing. The original audio is never sent or stored.
How Collected: Captured with your explicit permission when you choose to use camera or microphone features.
D. Usage Data and Analytics
Free Users: No usage data or analytics are collected.
Pro Users: We collect limited analytics data to improve app performance and features:
- Feature usage patterns (which Pro features you use, without specific details)
- Subscription status (whether you have an active Pro subscription)
- General app performance metrics (response times, success/error rates for AI features)
- Aggregated financial data ranges (expense amount ranges like "0-10" or "100-500," never exact amounts)
- Preferred currency code (e.g., USD, EUR, JPY)
Important Privacy Protections: We do not track exact transaction amounts, specific merchant names, or identifiable financial details in analytics. All financial data is aggregated into broad ranges before being logged.
How Collected: Automatically collected when you use Pro features.
E. Device Information
Free Users: No device information is collected or transmitted.
Pro Users: We collect minimal device information to coordinate cloud synchronization:
- Device identifiers (used only to prevent sync conflicts across your devices)
- Operating system version (for compatibility purposes)
How Collected: Automatically provided by your device when you enable cloud sync.
F. Location Data
We do not collect precise or approximate location data at any time.
G. Data We Do NOT Collect
- Browsing history or search history
- Location data of any kind
- Contact lists
- Crash logs or detailed diagnostic data
- Cross-app tracking or behavioral profiles
- Advertising identifiers
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect only for the following purposes:
A. To Provide Core App Functionality
- Track and categorize your expenses
- Calculate budgets and spending summaries
- Generate recurring expenses automatically
- Provide currency conversion rates (all users)
- Export your data in standard formats
B. To Enable Pro Features (Pro Users Only)
- Synchronize your data across multiple devices via cloud storage
- Process receipt images to extract expense information using artificial intelligence
- Convert voice commands into structured expense entries
- Detect prices in real-time using your device camera
- Authenticate your identity and manage your account
C. To Improve Our Services
- Analyze aggregated, privacy-protected usage patterns to identify popular features
- Monitor performance and error rates to improve reliability
- Understand general user preferences (e.g., preferred currencies, feature adoption)
D. To Process Payments
- Verify subscription purchases through Apple's payment system
- Manage subscription renewals, cancellations, and refunds
E. To Provide Customer Support
- Respond to your inquiries and support requests

3. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell your personal information to anyone.
We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:
A. Service Providers
We work with trusted third-party companies to operate Finl. These service providers only access your data to perform specific functions on our behalf and are contractually obligated to protect your information.
Google Firebase (Google LLC)
- Services Provided: User authentication, cloud database storage (Pro users only), and first-party analytics
- Data Shared: Email, name, unique user ID, expense data, subscription status, aggregated usage metrics
- Purpose: Enable cloud sync and measure app performance

OpenAI
- Services Provided: Artificial intelligence processing for receipt scanning and voice expense parsing (Pro features only)
- Data Shared: Receipt images (compressed), voice transcriptions (text only, not audio)
- Purpose: Extract expense information from receipts and voice commands
- Data Retention: OpenAI does not use your data for model training and automatically deletes all data immediately after processing (zero retention policy)

Apple Services
- Services Provided: Sign in with Apple, in-app purchase processing, on-device speech recognition, on-device vision processing
- Data Shared: Transaction receipts (for subscription verification), no other personal data shared by us
- Note: Speech recognition and price detection run entirely on your device and do not transmit data to external servers
B. Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., court orders, subpoenas, or government regulations).
C. Business Transfers
If Finl is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your personal information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
D. With Your Consent
We may share your information for any other purpose with your explicit consent.
4. Cross-Context Behavioral Advertising and Tracking
We do not engage in cross-context behavioral advertising or third-party tracking.
Finl does not:
- Share your data with advertising networks
- Track your behavior across other apps or websites
- Build advertising profiles
- Sell your data to data brokers
App Tracking Transparency (ATT): Our analytics are classified as first-party analytics used solely to improve Finl. Under Apple's guidelines, this does not require requesting tracking permission via the ATT framework. We have declared this in our Privacy Manifest filed with Apple.
5. Data Security
We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal information:
Encryption
- Data in Transit: All data transmitted between your device and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS protocols
- Data at Rest: Your local data is protected by iOS-level encryption on your device. Cloud-stored data is encrypted by our service providers
Access Controls
- Your data is partitioned by your unique user identifier, ensuring other users cannot access your information
- We enforce authentication requirements before granting access to cloud-synced data
Limitation
While we strive to protect your information, no method of electronic storage or internet transmission is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as necessary to provide our services and comply with legal obligations:
Active Data
- Local data on your device: Retained indefinitely until you manually delete it or uninstall the app
- Cloud-synced data (Pro users): Retained until you delete your account or request data deletion
Temporary Data
- Receipt images and voice transcriptions: Deleted immediately after AI processing completes
- Deleted expenses: Permanently removed from cloud storage promptly
Data Deletion
- User-requested deletions: All cloud data permanently deleted promptly upon your request
- System logs: Automatically deleted periodically per our infrastructure provider's retention policy
7. Your Privacy Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal information:
A. Right to Access
You can view and export all your expense data at any time through the app's export feature (CSV format). Contact us at [email protected] to request a copy of your account information.
B. Right to Rectification
You can edit or correct your expense data, categories, and budgets directly within the app. Changes sync automatically if you're a Pro user.
C. Right to Deletion
Free Users: Simply uninstall the app. All data is stored locally on your device and will be removed when you delete the app.
Pro Users: You can:
- Sign out of your account in Settings to stop cloud sync (your local data remains on your device)
- Request deletion of all your cloud-stored data by contacting [email protected]
Note: Your Apple ID account cannot be deleted through Finl as it is managed by Apple. However, you can delete all your financial data stored in Finl's cloud storage.
D. Right to Data Portability
You can export your expense data in CSV format at any time through the app's Settings menu.
E. Right to Object/Restrict Processing
You can disable cloud sync, revoke camera and microphone permissions, or sign out of your account at any time through iOS Settings or app Settings.
F. Right to Withdraw Consent
You may revoke permissions (camera, microphone, speech recognition) at any time through iOS Settings > Finl. This will disable related features but will not affect core expense tracking functionality.
8. Children's Privacy
Finl is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13 without parental consent, we will delete that information immediately. If you believe we may have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at [email protected].
9. International Data Transfers
Finl is operated from Taiwan by Tsung Jui Hsieh. Your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in countries other than your own, including the United States and other regions where our service providers (Google, OpenAI) operate their infrastructure.
These countries may have different data protection laws than your jurisdiction. By using Finl, you consent to the transfer of your information to these locations. We ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to protect your data in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
10. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):
- Right to Know: You can request details about the personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell (we do not sell personal information)
- Right to Delete: You can request deletion of your data stored in our systems (subject to certain exceptions)
- Right to Opt-Out: We do not sell personal information, so no opt-out is necessary
- Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights
